Preface

Preface#

This book develops Java programming from expressions, decisions, and methods to objects, collections, testing, files, and graphical interfaces. It is intended for college students learning Java, with some prior exposure to programming helpful but no previous Java experience required.

Read the worked examples, predict their behavior, and check the result. Subsection practice develops individual skills; each Chapter Exercise brings the chapter’s ideas together through application, explanation, and verification. Separate chapter assignments provide further practice.

Use a local Java development environment for the programs and desktop interfaces. Java execution through the ThinkPress browser runner is not configured for this book. This is a developing textbook; the lesson and assignment drafts will continue to be revised.
